Moon LRO NAC Mosaic Aitken Crater 17S173E 50cmp
This is a visible image mosaic generated using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. The images were orthorectified using a digital elevation model (DEM) created from LROC NAC stereo images, when available, or LRO's Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) global DEM. The mosaic is generated at the same resolution at which the individual LROC NAC images were gathered, which is approximately 0.5 meters/pixel. The mosaic was registered horizontally to the LOLA global DEM.

General
- Purpose
The NASA Constellation Program (CxP) has identified 50 regions of interest on the Moon that the LROC NAC will image. A mosaic is generated for each of these regions using the acquired LROC NAC images. High resolution mosaics will be essential for identifying potential landing sites, landing site hazards, placement of landed assets on the surface, as well as other surface operations and navigation needs.

- Process Description
This image mosaic merges multiple visible LROC NAC images into one larger image using Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers (ISIS 3.2.1). The individual images are calibrated to reflectance (I/F), horizontally controlled to each other, orthorectified, and then balanced and stretched from 32 bit to 8bit for the final output image. > For orthorectification, a high resolution DEM (1.5 to 5 meters/pixel) for each sites was first produced by the Geomatics team at the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The global LOLA DEM at 128 pixels/degree (237 meters/pixel) resolution is used to fill in the area around the high resolution DEM where there is no stereo coverage. Blending and feathering techniques were used to blend the two DEMs together. Next, the images are calibrated so the density values represent reflectance (I/F). > Once the image is loaded into ISIS, the spacecraft pointing (SPICE) information is updated and the shape model is defined for the image. To better automatically control the images to one another, a Sobel gradient filter is applied to each image to enhance the crater rims. A network of tie points is then created along the overlap of the left/right image pairs and around the outer edges of the pair. Occasionally, tie points are added manually if the automatic registration fails. Using this control the entire set of images is run through a bundle adjustment. The images are then map projected and orthorectified using the merged DEM to the standard projection, center latitude, center longitude, and resolution selected for each site mosaic. The last steps include merging the map projected images into the final mosaic and then linearly stretch the 32bit ISIS mosaic to an 8bit GeoTiff format. > LROC images used: M149384426LE.IMG, M149384426LE.IMG, M156455060RE.IMG, M145841560RE.IMG, M121077222RE.IMG, M151738841RE.IMG, M154100130LE.IMG, M154100130RE.IMG, M123438768LE.IMG, M138771635LE.IMG, M138771635RE.IMG, M108095094LE.IMG, M108095094RE.IMG, M123438768RE.IMG, M141126177LE.IMG, M141126177RE.IMG, M110459130LE.IMG, M110459130RE.IMG, M112815322LE.IMG, M112815322RE.IMG, M112822108LE.IMG, M112822108RE.IMG, M115170547LE.IMG, M115170547RE.IMG, M115177299LE.IMG, M115177299RE.IMG, M121070418LE.IMG, M121070418RE.IMG, M121077222LE.IMG, M128155714LE.IMG, M123431984LE.IMG, M123431984RE.IMG, M125794242LE.IMG, M125794242RE.IMG, M125801026LE.IMG, M125801026RE.IMG, M128148929LE.IMG, M128148929RE.IMG, M156461862LE.IMG, M156461862RE.IMG, M128155714RE.IMG, M130510363LE.IMG, M130510363RE.IMG, M134049236LE.IMG, M134049236RE.IMG, M138764852LE.IMG, M138764852RE.IMG, M141132981LE.IMG, M141132981RE.IMG, M134056021LE.IMG, M134056021RE.IMG, M143487037LE.IMG, M143487037RE.IMG, M145841560LE.IMG, M158815583LE.IMG, M158815583RE.IMG, M145848346LE.IMG, M145848346RE.IMG, M151738841LE.IMG, M154093347LE.IMG, M154093347RE.IMG, M156455060LE.IMG, M118715678LE.IMG, M118715678RE.IMG, M161170544LE.IMG, M161170544RE.IMG, M161177329LE.IMG, M161177329RE.IMG, M164709790LE.IMG, M164709790RE.IMG, M149377661LE.IMG, M149377661RE.IMG, M167064651LE.IMG, M167064651RE.IMG, M169432838LE.IMG, M169432838RE.IMG, M164716629LE.IMG, M164716629RE.IMG, M130517148LE.IMG, M130517148RE.IMG, M134049236LE.IMG, M134049236RE.IMG, M134049236RE.IMG, M134049236LE.IMG.
