The USGS/NASA Astrogeology RPIF contains many unique research materials and artifacts. Including:
- Images and films of Apollo astronaut training
- Forty years of draft map materials including original airbrush images
- Documents chronicling USGS Astrogeology's involvement in 50 years of space mission planning
- Special document collections devoted to asteroid impact science, the life and career of Eugene Shoemaker, and astronaut training
- An inventory of approximately 60,000 maps including over 2500 unique titles
- Grover, the Geologic Rover, a full-size Apollo astronaut training vehicle from the 1960s
- An extensive collection of vintage map-making tools dating to the 1950s
- A complete set of early Mariner Mars mission imagery
