Worked with Steve Self and Thorvaldur Thordarson on the emplacement of the Columbia River Basalts as inflated pahoehoe sheet flows. Also studied the crystallization, cooling, and hardening of basalt with Jeff Taylor, Carl Thornber, and Kirti Sharma.
1991-1999 Guest Investigator U. S. Geological Survey, Hawai'ian Volcano Observatory. Assisted the staff in monitoring the +17 year long Kilauea eruption. Specialized in collecting in situ field data on the dynamics and cooling of lava flows.
2001-present Co-Investigator, HiRISE Team, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. High resolution camera 2005 Mars orbiter. Responsible for targeting and science analysis for volcanology; E/PO activities in the southwest, Hawai'i, Alaska, and Cascades; and sequence design, data validation, and other activities at the HIRISE operations center.

1999-2002 Associate Team Member, Galileo Solid State Imager. Liaison between the science team and the JPL engineers in developing encounter sequences, updating playback plans, and correcting instrument anomalies during close encounters with Io. Also assist in the production of press release materials and participate in press briefings at the University of Arizona and the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union.
1999-2001 MS Thesis committee member. Supervising the work of MS student Kirti Sharma at the University of Hawai'i on the non-equilibrium crystallization of basaltic lava flows. Ms. Sharma graduated in the Spring of 2001.
Fall 2000 Convener, GSA topical session. Entitled "Interpreting the morphology of mafic and ultramafic lava flows" to bring together petrologists, volcanologists, and planetary scientists who want to understand the processes that produce the lava flows we see.
Fall 1999 Co-convener, AGU special session and post-AGU workshop. Provided a forum to bring terrestrial and planetary scientists examining ultramafic volcanism on Earth and Io together.
Summer 1998 Instructor, Center for the Study of Active Volcanism, University of Hawai'i, Hilo. Taught the physical volcanology portion of the field volcanology class. Included effusive and explosive volcanism, remote sensing, and a trip to the active flows.
