IMPORTANT DATES

May 13 Deadline for registration at lower rate
June 2 Deadline for abstract submission
August 13 Icebreaker
August 14-15 Conference
August 16-18 Field excursion

INTRODUCTION

Since the first announcement was circulated through E-mail in December the response has been very promising. Over 70 people from 10 countries have already expressed interest in attending. These include both terrestrial and planetary scientists, geologists, geophysicists, volcanologists, glaciologists and astrophysicists.

The conference on Volcano/Ice Interaction on Earth and Mars will be the first of its kind. The aim is to bring together geologists, geophysicists, glaciologists and planetary scientists studying various aspects of the interaction of volcanoes and ice sheets/ice caps. Recent volcanic eruptions in Iceland and detailed studies of subglacially erupted deposits in Antarctica and elsewhere, have provided important new data that should lead to significant advance in the understanding of ice/volcano interaction. Moreover, considerable work is being carried out on the interaction of pyroclastic flows and snow/ice cover on the slopes of stratovolcanoes. The conference seeks to provide a forum where detailed terrestrial studies will be presented and comparative Martian analogues and processes discussed.

CONFERENCE FORMAT

The conference will include a few invited talks on key aspects of volcano-ice interaction. However it is expected that most talks and posters will be contributed. A 3 day field trip is planned immediately following the meeting, focusing on subglacially erupted hyaloclastites and landforms and deposits of volcanic jokulhlaups.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Contributions on all aspects of subglacial volcanism and ice/volcanointeraction are being sought.  Some of the issues that the meeting will address are:

  1. Eruptive, hydrologic, and glaciologic dynamics of terrestrial subglacial eruptions
  2. Geomorphic and lithofacies analysis and construction of sub-ice volcanoes and related sedimentary plains
  3. Volcano-ice interaction at stratovolcanoes
  4. Hydrothermal evolution, mineralogic and biologic formation of palagonite
  5. Subglacial volcanism and climate history
  6. Hazard implications of sub-ice volcanism
  7. Remote sensing of terrestrial subglacial features
  8. Sub-ice volcanism, palagonites, and hydrothermal evolution on Mars
  9. Hydrological and geomorphological history of Mars and paleoclimatic implications.

Abstracts can be submitted for oral presentations or as posters.
Oral presentations should be planned for 15 minute duration with 5 minutes for comments.
Abstract submission deadline: June 2, 2000

Publication of proceedings is planned and a publishing house has been approached on the matter. This would be the first publication ever devoted to the subject. Details will be announced later.

INFORMATION ON TRAVEL TO ICELAND

Icelandair connects Reykjavik to the following cities in the U.S. and Canada: New York, Boston, Baltimore, Minneapolis, Orlando, and Halifax. Please note that no other airline offers flights from North America to Iceland. Connections are available with Icelandair and other airlines (during summer) with most major European cities. Conference participants are strongly advised to book early and take advantage of Apex fares. See the web site www.icelandair.com for further information or contact your local travel agency. Since flights from North America leave in the evening and arrive in Iceland in the early morning hours, participants from North America are advised to arrive one day before the start of the meeting, to adjust to the time difference (Iceland is on GMT all year round). Please note that your are not able to check in at your hotel until 2:00 p.m. the first booking day.
