New map products from planet Mars

Hartmut Lehmann & Joerg Albertz (albertz@fpk.tu-berlin.de)

Two maps of the landing site of the Mars Pathfinder have been generated on the basis of Viking Orbiter data. They will be on display as posters.

The map sheet "MARS 1:2,000,000 Mouth of Ares and Tiu Valles" presents the mapped area on the planet's northern hemisphere in two different cartographic categories. The Image Map, portraying the surface and its morphology, is complemented by the Geologic Map, showing the geological units and features as a conventional thematic map. Both cartographic presentations are identical in map projection and scale. Thus the area of nearly 450,000 square kilometers can easily be compared and analyzed. Mapping of the geological units has been achieved by the Vernadsky Institute of the Russian Academy of Science, image data have been provided from JPL, image processing, map compilation and production was carried out at the Technical University of Berlin in cooperation with the Institute of Planetary Exploration of DLR.

The map sheet "Image map MARS 1:200,000 Landing Site Mars Pathfinder" gives a closer look to the landing site and its neighbourhood. In processing of the imagery some data acquired during the Mars Pathfinder Mission have been considered in order to improve the geometric quality of the map. This sheet is also an outcome of the cooperation between JPL, DLR and the Technical University of Berlin.
